Sisterhood
From seven young teachers, Sigma Gamma Rho has become an international service organization comprised of women from every profession. Sigma Gamma Rho offers its members opportunities to develop their unique leadership abilities and talents through leadership training and involvement in sorority activities and programs. Sorority activities provide an atmosphere to develop friendships and connect with a global network of professional contacts which last and provide invaluable support, sisterly love and career assistance for a lifetime.
Scholarship
Founded November 12, 1922, on the campus of Butler University, in a time when education for African-Americans was difficult to attain, the Founders of Sigma Gamma Rho became educators. They believed that the self respect, knowledge and discipline gained through study would help individuals recognize their duty and responsibility to their society. Thus, Sigma Gamma Rho was founded on the precept of education and continues to promote and encourage high scholastic attainment.
Service
Sigma Gamma Rho’s legacy of and continued commitment to service is expressed in its slogan “Greater Service, Greater Progress.” The sorority has a proud history of providing positive and proactive service wherever chapters exist.

CHAPTER HERSTORY
During a time when Sigma Gamma Rho was growing in chapters and numbers across the nation and internationally, ten Sigma woman recognized the need for expansion of Sigma Gamma Rho membership in the state of Maryland. These ladies saw a need for community service in the untapped territory of Howard County, Maryland. Originally chartered in Newark, Delaware, after several years of inactivity, the Eta Zeta Sigma Chapter was relocated and reactivated in Ellicott City, Maryland. The chapter was re-chartered on March 19, 2006 in Ellicott City, Howard County, Maryland.
