About Us

The Eta Zeta Sigma Chapter was established on March 19, 2006, as part of the distinguished legacy of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. During a period of national and international growth, ten visionary Sigma women recognized the need to expand Sigma Gamma Rho’s presence in Maryland. The dedicated women responsible for the reactivation of Eta Zeta Sigma are Marlo D. Lemon, Melissa Jones-Holley, April Johnson, Charnette Taylor-Wright, Diana Benson, Wendy Pegues, Crystal Chavis, Sonja Sharif, Cynthera McNeill, and Bryna Stoute.

Originally chartered in Newark, Delaware, after several years of inactivity, the Eta Zeta Sigma Chapter was relocated and reactivated in Ellicott City, Maryland. Since our chartering, Eta Zeta Sigma has been dedicated to supporting our community in Howard County through service-driven programs, mentorship, health initiatives, and educational outreach.

Guided by our motto Greater Service, Greater Progress, we strive to make a positive impact through community partnerships, educational resources, and empowering initiatives.

Sorority History

Founded on November 12, 1922, on the campus of Butler University by seven young educators at a time when higher education for African Americans was difficult to attain, Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. has grown into an international service organization of women representing every profession.

Grounded in the belief that self-respect, knowledge, and discipline gained through education empower individuals to serve society, the sorority remains committed to promoting high scholastic achievement.

Through a lifelong global network of sisterhood, Sigma Gamma Rho provides opportunities for personal growth, professional support, and enduring friendships, all while advancing its enduring commitment to service.
